Topic: Writing for Survival When My Support System is Gone

Happy Saturday! I have been absent for a while. Truth is I was surprised by your reaction to the affiliate post. Don’t worry. There is more coming. But I really wanted to make the focus of this blog writing. So, I am endeavoring to do both. Keeping that in mind, my topic for this post is two-fold:

  1. Time management

  2. Writing as a freelance ghostwriter.

Β

Β

  1. Time Management

How do I get into one 24-hour period all I want to do while making time for me and my family? I do not want to miss out on completion of my to-do list that I took the time to write out for a reason. I mean, here I am on my social media (Facebook: Nalani Harmon, Yasmine Jameson) (Instagram: Nalani Harmon) (Alignable: Nicole Harmon dba Yasmine Jameson)…telling you that you can do it. Just like you, I struggle. Mostly, it is because I sleep at night. Note: You really need to sleep. I have found out personally to me an all-nighter means I completed what I had to do. Two cups of coffee later, I am still awake but am up to date. Flipside of that is I am also tired.

But the harder work pays off. I have more money (slightly). Writers aren’t paid a lot. The blockbuster sellers aren’t that many. I get told I am an okay writer. I don’t sell. Well I am a great writer. I get paid. My mystery, once it is not so painful for an English teacher to read or another author to read should and will sell well. I can do this. Be a self-published writer who sells books to you my public.

You the reader and buyer of my novels are the other half of this artist to consumer transaction. For years, I have heard from “the public” my book should be re-written. My poetry-it’s not realistic. Or to their taste. Here is my favorite: it doesn’t speak to my lifestyle. (Translation: LGBTQ+) Well hello, I don’t write about it in detail. There are two or three glossed over poems regarding those relationships. So no my poetry of my personal viewpoint on relationships/sexual fantasy will not be re-written until I see fit. Here is a huge thank you to the people who have actually experienced what I wrote about. One day too, I will as well.

Part of time management is reading through all of my email. Responding to those emails is a whole other paragraph. So at last count I had over 5000 emails. And it’s March. I do go through and unsubscribe from junk mail. Did you know it’s like a fungus-junk mail? I had set up a schedule to not read my email all day. Twice a day and just check up when I was notified that an email I was waiting for had come through by the sender. So at the start of the work day it is catch up on any emails and after midnight I read all of the previous days email. I succeeded for three days. (To those who read each and every email-you are a godsend.) And then I fell off the bandwagon. I am going back to that.

When do I sleep? I am seriously considering naps. I will figure it out as I go because I really need to start back going through my email daily.

  1. Writing as a Freelance Ghostwriter

I found out ghostwriting can indeed net you assignments. I have made some money from one client website. I am getting more work from that website as well. It is easy to see a lot of jobs but not so easy to choose which to bid on. This is for both sites that I am a member of and sign into for work. I mean, I want higher paying jobs-both long-term and short-term.

The problem is job satisfaction rate. I need it to be higher. I need it to be excellent. This means I am working at being a better ghostwriter for my clients. A happier client means a higher job satisfaction rate. A higher more job requests. But that is part of it.

My actual writing for the client that I showcase in my portfolio the appearance on the website, the read rate of the actual written article as well. I say this because of an article writing job I had for ThoughtNova.com. I was paid based upon who read my article, and I actually to surprise got paid. It was so cool. Plus it meant people read pay writing. Not sure if they agreed with on. With sincere thanks to those readers, I love ya’ll.

Writing, although solitary, is pretty fun but also hard work creating a story takes imagination, time and perseverance. Writing offers many opportunities for networking, also. By its nature, you the writer collaborate with everyone. Artists, musicians, journalists, teachers, sex workers, everyone. You get invited to events. You get offered free stuff. I kid you not. All the time. With are the networking when do you work?

You work all the time. People, events, television, music-all work. Bathroom work. You write what you know. And inspiration strikes anywhere, but it takes more than inspiration. Writing takes work. And work you will until you get a headache sometimes. Deadlines are important. You can’t really miss them.

Deadlines are one of the most important aspects of a writer’s life. I give myself self-imposed deadline. I don’t always keep them. But I make more money when I do. Writing as a ghostwriter, I have a deadline pursuant to the client’s schedule. I have missed many a deadline I’m a work in progress. It normally happens when I have three or more assignments, only two are active. The two are a lot. Except its remote for one and the second is via Kindle app. I still bid on new jobs for long-term, bread and butter job.

My bread and butter job will provide one with the basic money needed for me to survive on my own. Rent, utility, cable and internet, phone, car and gas (transportation) grocery and clothes. If I were to get a job freelance ghostwriting that was my bread and butter, I would achieve my goal of being self-employed and living off my proceeds.

I believe I can achieve that I’m starting. I actually make half of my bread and butter salary one month. Now to make the whole money, in one month. Next goal one year. And final goal is to make a year.

My Goals for 2021 Revisited

For this year, I want to have a steady stream of income that increase each month. So far I have had money each month. I’m hoping this month I kick it off. I found out the amount of money I need to earn to survive. Included rent charges. So my one true goal that is a must is to earn survival money each month for a year. I will add expenses as I go. The amount for survival goes up by the amount of the charge.

In six months, that is-September 2021, I will revisit and tell you how I am doing. Sept. 23, 2021. Mark your calendar.

Β

Tip for the day:

Although it’s Tuesday, you can still get some work done and spend time with your family. Just prioritize which tasks are more important and will take the most time. Spend your day doing that. And make sure to get your eight hours of sleep.

With sincere thanks.

Title: The Perfect Guests

Summary

1988

Emma Rous writes a story about the intertwining family of Beth, Nina, Leonora, Markus, Hendrik, Dr. Sawyer, Jonas, Caroline and Sadie. It started when Leonora’s father lost his estate and committed suicide, leaving his daughter and family to survive independently. Their attorney, Hendrik, offered to buy the estate to give him some financial stability until he could get back on his feet. He, Leonora’s father, refused. She never forgave the attorney for his apparent role in the death of her father. Fast forward, a new family now lives and owns the estate her family lost. They were interlopers. Enter: Caroline, Markus, and Hendrik. Not knowing who he was when she first met him, Leonora thought Markus was a nice man. The two hit it off. Soon she was stealing away to meet him at his flat. Then he broke it off with Caroline and married Leonora. His father wasn’t happy. Along came Nina. The three lived at the estate her father lost many years ago. Her circle was complete until his father, Hendrik, came back around. She was terrified that he would want to sell the estate and kick her off and out of her home.

Enter Beth. Unbeknownst to Leonora, Caroline, the former girlfriend of Markus, was pregnant. She quietly gave birth to Nina and gave her daughter to her aunt, Caroline’s sister, to raise. A tragedy befell that family when the family she grew up with died in a car accident. Nina went into a home until Caroline picked her up to bring her to Leonora, Markus, and Nina lived. Not knowing what would happen there, Beth was glad of a family to be a part of but longer for her aunt. Then Leonora and Markus requested an odd thing from her. She, Beth, had to impersonate Nine, Leonora’s daughter, in front of Markus’s father, her grandfather, during his visits. He talked about taking Nina back to England with them, and Nina didn’t want to go. So this was to protect Nina and not stress her out. Initially, it was because Nina had fallen inextricably and unexplainably ill. After the visit was over, she miraculously recovered. And so it continued for each subsequent visit.

During one of those visits, Beth began to suspect that Nina was being poisoned by someone at the house-she suspected Leonora. Voicing her fears and suspicions to Nina did not have the desired effect. Nina set fire to the house.

While all of this was going on, Beth and Jonas seem to have begun to have feelings for each other and had fallen in love. But Beth felt obligated to not act on those feelings as it would jeopardize her position and place at the estate. This pissed off Jonas, but he still wanted to be with her. So angry though he was, he continued to see her. That is until the fire where Markus died by drowning.

2019

The new owners of the estate have scheduled a murder mystery weekend for a few guests. Sadie, who was in the midst of looking for the job, got asked for by name due to her being an actor. So Sadie and Nazleen- Lady Nightingale, Joe, Miss Genevieve Lamb/Mouse, Colonel Otter, Professor Everett Owl, and Zach. The deceased for the event was Lord Nightingale, who was murdered by one of the other guests. The game afoot-determine which one of the guests is guilty of murder. Throughout the first evening- the scene will be laid to give the guests information to determine who the killer is. Mrs. Shrew is the maid and housekeeper. Through dinner, Sadie observed the guests and read the little cards that had the information written on them to help her and the others solve the murder. However, she was unsettled because it seemed to be a little too personal. After a while, Lady Nightingale retired, claiming she was ill. Some of the other guests, including Sadie, also weren’t feeling well. Miss Lamb/Mouse went outside to smoke. None of the guests could get a signal. Upon the groups retiring to bed, all were uneasy, and some weren’t feeling well. None knew where Ms. Lamb/Mouse was and was concerned, but we’re hopeful she went into town.

Meanwhile, Sadie’s mother, who was away on a retreat for her mind’s sanity, rushed back to be with her daughter when she found out where she had gone to for the job. Beth’s only concern was that something bad would happen, and it all involved the estate of the Averall’s.

At sometime during the night, a fire was set inside the house. But the fire alone wasn’t the danger. The fire was placed on their only escape route out-the stairwell. All the windows in each of the rooms the guests were in were nailed shut. Some cool thinking and ingenuity saved them from burning on the top level, and they managed to get to Mrs. Shrew. You know what woke them all up? Sadie’s mother was outside her window, warning her of the fire.

When all were assembled outside, Sadie’s mother, Beth, recognized Leonora and Nina. She also recognized Joe and his father. She was horrified at the story that poured out of Nina-who was responsible for both fires being set. All because her Mom loved the estate more than her own daughter. Because Beth was the true family of Markus. Because her true father, the doctor, felt sad at the loss of life. Once she was found safe to be tried for attempted murder, she was.

Beth, Sadie, Joe, Caroline, and Hendrik began a new chapter in their lives as a family. Although Caroline didn’t have much to do with her daughter, Beth and Sadie had the relationship of family and strength, and she finally got to marry Joe.

Analysis

I gave this novel five bookmarks. It was well worth the read. When I started it, I was like, oh all right, it’s like Clue-then House on a Haunted Hill- if you survive the weekend, you win a lot of money. But as it went on and it kept flipping back and forth between the past and the present, I began to think that the past had a lot more to do with the present circumstances than people knew. Consider Lord Nightingale was murdered by one of the guests. Sadie’s mother got blamed for the fire being set a long time ago on the same night that Markus perished by going after Nina and her on the precarious ice. Consider that Nina’s mother tried to poison her daughter to keep from being found out by her father in law about Nina’s parentage. That was Caroline’s secret. All the interconnections come out as you read, but the story about the murder isn’t really murder. Markus died by falling through the ice going after both his real daughters. Whether or not he fathered Nina didn’t matter as he considered her his daughter. The relationship that developed between Beth and Jonas was not expected, but Beth did not want to hurt Nina. She felt that they were sisters. But that feeling wasn’t enough for Nina to not attempt to burn Beth and her family to death in retaliation for being told her mother tried to poison her to prevent her from meeting her grandfather. Once the family moved from the estate, and she met her true father, she finally understood why. Did she forgive her mother? I think she came to understand her. But both Leonora and Nina lost a lot in the years following the tragic death of Markus.

The set up for the murder mystery weekend is excellent, as well as the scenery. It is in some drafty old estate with a sad, tragic history. The family is still considered to be one that people don’t talk too much about. The little cards were a touch of genius. Although they were to lay the important facts about each character to help solve the crime, Sadie thought hers were too personal, as if the person knew her life story. She felt that someone else had to have the same feeling. But it wasn’t until her mother showed up and Joe recognized her that the pieces made sense.

This story will have you following its every turn and every connection until the very end.

I recommend that you buy this book.

Enjoy the read!

Freelancing News

I am asking for advice on computer models to buy for working as a freelance author. I write content and my own novels. I am also now making my own book covers. So it has to be portable and I also would like a big screen. Touch screen is good particularly for signing documents online ( which I have done a few times now). Professional software and Windows 10 or higher. I also like Microsoft Edge and Chrome. I would love it to carry both if possible. Just lately I have had the urge to watch movies so I would love a projector; it would be cool if it had the ability to do so. Plus this times I want to actually use the machine to record on Dragon. I know it seems I ramble, I do. It’s like a work in progress without the clarity.

I do like Hewlett Packard machines and Dell. I also like Toshiba and Mac. A Mac would be ideal but for me way to expensive.  Any suggestions would be helpful. I’m collecting tons. All three of my computer expert friends as I have called them are exasperated.

Holidays are e-coming!

The holidays are here. Yes, that time of the year with back-to-back holidays: Halloween, All Saints Day, Thanksgiving Day, Hannukah, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Kwaanza, New Years Eve, New Years Day and Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday. Money, Money and Money!

For those of us finally making money, the holidays are a stressful time. Where do we find money for gifts, dinner, travel, etc? Some are on assistance, some apply for assistance, the rest find creative ways to celebrate the holiday. Here is a list of five creative ways to celebrate the holidays.

  1. Etsy http://www.etsy.com

I knew of Etsy but mostly through my friends who opened a business. This year, I participate in Secret Sister gifts. Gifts as low as $5.00 on up. Puzzles, glasses, jewelry and other items.

2. Amazon http://www.amazon.com

This should be an easy one to understand. Use the Amazon warehouse, Returns and other store sites under the Amazon umbrella.

3. Handmade Gifts

A gift made by your own hand is always welcomed. Whether you’re a knitter, sewer, quilter, cricut machine user or loom user, it’s always welcome.

4. Gift cards, gift certificates and mall gift certificates

If you know you don’t have a lot of money or time, giving a gift certificate allows the user to put the money towards what they want. The catch is that you may have to use within a certain timeframe.

5. Wish! http://www.wish.com

I got some very nice jewelry from here and it was cheap. Codicil, it may be a few weeks before you get it in the mail. Electronics, clothing, cellular phones, jewelry, and school items. You can also buy headscarves there as well. Granted this is not a large list but you can make the holidays very nice for your family and someone not related to you.

Since Thanksgiving is coming up here are some suggestions for Turkey day.

  1. If you don’t cook and have money, buy a dinner from the restaurants that offer it. I went to a friend’s family’s house and she did that. Dinner was very nice and tasty.
  2. Go to a church dinner or a shelter dinner. You can enjoy time with other persons who don’t have a family to share with or just don’t have the means to make the dinner themselves.
  3. Go to food pantry and take what they offer and fill in with food from the store. Cook dinner. If you need apply for food stamps and use those. Hopefully, it will come in time for you to use for the holiday of Thanksgiving or the next one. As always remember to enjoy the holiday.

History-I love history so before I close out this post I want to leave you with a historical fact about Thanksgiving. Did you know there are four towns in the U.S. named Turkey? Those towns are found in Arizona, Texas, Louisiana and North Carolina. courtesy of worldstrides.com/blog/2016/1119-fun-facts-about-thanksgiving/amp.

Note: I apologize for the lateness of the update. I am posting after Thanksgiving Day but the advice is good year round. I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

My Affiliate Experience to Date

This might be an informative article for those not in the know.

Remember I wrote “What Am I Doing and How Am I Doing It?, a few weeks ago? This is going into more depth about it.

Affiliate programs are a way to increase your finance via commission.

I received an email from Matt McWilliams offering a way to make some money by becoming an affiliate. What you do is this:

You agree to send emails and posts advertisements to generate interest in order to facilitate a conversion to a member in an organization. In exchange for your efforts you are paid a commission. And each time you participate in their campaign, you make money. You’re thinking there is a catch, right?

No, no catch. All you do is sign up and complete the assignment as instructions tell you too. But it’s also very involved. You get a schedule of emails which is when to send out which email. You also receive the body of the emails you will send out. There are also pictures to use in the emails. You get social media posts body and pictures to use as well.

It seems easy but its a lot of work. You can’t use the the exact email or it’s recommended that you don’t. And you develop a mailing list.I do caution you  not be discouraged out of 35-50 original.  I had 3 opt outs, no responses and two attendees in one campaign. In another company I had approaching 200+ clicks but no conversions.

If interested in participating in some affiliate groups please drop a comment and I will respond.
